The Slackers Santa Barbara Concert reviews
The band and The Slackers were great as always. The band was very relaxed and confident, and The Slackers were in a very relaxed and upbeat mood. Once again, the intensity and magic of last year's show wasn't there but it was great to see and hear something a bit different. With such a huge and fantastic song catalog, it's hard to NOT do something special for each show. He has enough loyal fans who are open to different types of set-lists and surprises, so he will never have to be stuck in the rut the Stones have been in for a million years. His voice was in great shape, although the last show I thought his voice was a bit ragged. Clearly, he doesn't leap around much anymore, but he still moves around a lot, interacts with the crowd all the time, has plenty of energy, and sings his ass off. Clarence seems well too. Perhaps he has lost a bit of weight. His back must be feeling better because he didn't sit down that often and he held his saxophones - as opposed to keeping them on stands. Mighty Max may still be the most underestimated member of the band. He has to play his ass off for three hours straight and hold it together. He just seems to have more finesse every time I see him. I too would have preferred a performance of the Darkness album, but I have never heard him play Night so that was great. They had a fantastic trumpet player who was a big help on meeting Across The River and 10th AVE Freeze-out. He even played a few lines of the St. Louis Blues, which was cool although I bet many folks didn't know what it was. The best behaved crowd at a big show that I have seen in YEARS. Not ONE person passed by me to get a beer or whatever. People were actually listening in the quiet and intimate moments as well. What a concept. My favorite song may still be the Detroit Medley. I never get tired of that, and I just think it's the perfect Rock and Roll show song and perfect for that band and type of event.
